PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Welcome Members and Prospective Members,
On March 25, we held our members’ meeting at the Darlington House, and I would like to report on some of the initiatives that the National Economists Club is undertaking, as well as to provide an update.
Programs: This year, the National Economists Club has held great lunches, with speakers such as Stan Collender, Rebecca Blank, Mark Zandi, Denny Dennis, Doug Duncan, and Congressional Budget Director Doug Elmendorf, Robert Shiller, and Alison Lynn Reaser of NABE. Our VPs for Programs, Ed Kean and Bob Graboyes have done a great job, and we expect to announce our schedule through Summer 2010 soon. We are also working to bring in more top policymakers and advisors to speak to us this year. If you have ideas as to speakers, please send them to Ed Kean (ekean@observatorygroup.com) or Bob Graboyes (bob.graboyes@nfib.org).
Special Programs: We expect to hold more “NEC on Campus” events, speaker receptions at embassies, and NEC/NABE Get Connected networking events. If you have suggestions for special events, please contact our VP for Special Programs, Greg Tenentes, at events@national-economists.org.
Venues: We have been trying different venues for our weekly lunches and breakfasts over the past year. This year, these venu
es have included Darlington House (1610 20th Street, NW) and the National Federation of Independent Business (1201 F Street, NW). Going forward, we expect to continue to be holding lunches at Darlington House and are aiming to hold breakfasts at the National Federation of Independent Business. But we expect to remain at Chinatown Gardens (618 H Street, NW), with our partner organization, Society of Government Economists, for every third Thursday in the month, and every so often for a NEC lunch. For some of the events at the City Club, we plan to work with management regarding the arrangements in the room so there is no issue hearing the speaker or audience questions. Note that at all venues, there is to be a vegetarian option available. So please ask and also notify Ann Edmunds (the NEC Business Manager) beforehand at info@national-economists.org. We will try to continue to post the menu options on our website, venue permitting. As to the venues themselves, I have continued with the previous administration’s Restaurant Committee, in order to seek out venues that can accommodate our members’ and speakers’ needs. If you have any suggestions, please contact the Committee’s Chair, Jules Lichtenstein, at info@national-economists.org.
Corporate Structure: I also wanted to note that earlier this year the Club approved new bylaws. A copy of them is available here.
Technology: We have been upgrading the Club’s technology to adapt to the changing needs of our speakers and even look forward to the possibility of moving from recording lunches in an audio format to a video format to display on our website. We have lifted all restrictions on NEC materials for Calendar Year 2010 and will continue to do so to increase the Club’s visibility. We also plan to modernize the registration system for NEC events later this year to ease the process of attending them. We will plan to improve our newsletters through the inclusion of links to materials from previous NEC lunches. If there are other suggestions, please contact our VP for Communications, Kaylon McInelly, at kmcinelly@gmail.com.
And of course, if you wish to be a rapporteur for an event, please contact our VP for Rapporteurs, Nicole Firment, at rapporteur@national-economists.org prior to the event.
If you have any suggestions or comments as to locations, food, costs, speakers, etc... please send them to me at president@national-economists.org.
Regards,
Eric Robins, President
